As their popularity has grown so has their versatility; their wide range of music has helped increase their fan base across the country making them one of the fastest growing country music acts in New England. Having the most requested song on Maine’s #1 Country Music station for 16 straight weeks, as well as adding a handful of New England Music Awards,, 12/OC isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Isaiah Bennett is a Billboard Top 10 country artist from Southern Maine. A husband, father of 3, and musical troubadour. His musical journey began in 2007 busking on street corners in Boise, Idaho and playing wineries in Northern California before returning home to Maine. THE SUITCASE JUNKET

Friday, April 26, 2024 - 8:00 PM EDT

Vinegar Hill presents The Suitcase Junket, with special guest, Sara Cox!

Join us for food and drinks before the show in our outdoor garden starting at 6pm!

The night’s food truck is Vintage Dogs - featuring a spread of specialty hot dogs, sandwiches, and fries!

The Suitcase Junket:

Matt Lorenz, the creative force behind The Suitcase Junket, envisions a captivating blend of grandiosity and solitude. His one-man spectacle, characterized by grand imagery, sound, and staging, stands in stark contrast to the solitary ethos of thrift and self-reliance that defines his musical craft. Lorenz’s ability to construct instruments from scratch and perform the roles of an entire band underscores his brilliance and inventiveness. Amidst the spectacle, Lorenz remains deeply committed to his craft, residing in rural Western Massachusetts with rescue dogs and chickens, all while building a profound catalog that intricately weaves together characters, narratives, and diverse sounds. In his 2020 release, “The End is New,” produced by longtime collaborator Steve Berlin, Lorenz confronts the challenges facing the world, expressing his response through a unique blend of truth, myth, confessions, and stories.

The album, born from Lorenz’s desire to create a “doom-folk” record, took shape in the midst of the global pandemic, transforming the recording process into a bizarre yet fruitful bicoastal collaboration. Despite the challenges, Lorenz, Berlin, and their studio musicians navigated the uncertainty, crafting an album that reflects both hope and desperation. As Lorenz expands his artistic horizons, collaborating and delving into societal reflections, “The End is New” emerges as a testament to his lyrical prowess, matched by epic sounds and narratives across eleven tracks. From the numbing effect of the news cycle in “Black Holes and Overdoses” to the protest against planetary overuse in “Can’t Look Away,” Lorenz’s sixth album showcases his evolution as an artist, blending refined sound with profound storytelling. With extensive touring plans in 2021 and an array of artistic endeavors, including visual art and video production, Lorenz continues to captivate audiences with his multifaceted creativity and unwavering commitment to his craft.

Sarah Cox:

Cape Porpoise, Maine-based singer-songwriter Sara Cox spent her childhood in Nashville, TN. She wrote her first song on ukulele at age 9 and the lyrics and songs on her albums reflect her southern roots and the hours spent listening to records on repeat, singing harmonies in headphones. Cox’s parents are musicians, and she grew up in a household where three-part harmony was a part of the usual after-dinner entertainment. She began singing and songwriting professionally in her early 20s and launched her solo career in 2000 with her first release, an EP called Firewater. Her debut full length solo album Arrive drew attention that led to her being named “One to Watch” by the syndicated public radio show Acoustic Cafe in association with the USA Songwriting Competition, as well as a stellar review by the folk/altcountry bible No Depression Magazine. Her 2008 album Crowded is the New Lonely was released to wide acclaim and charted on national Americana radio stations. Cox has shared the stage with Ray LaMontagne, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Stacey Earle, Joe Ely, Richard Buckner and Lori McKenna.

From her early days, staying late after-hours at her video rental store job in Brunswick, Maine to record songs, to co-producing and arranging her five studio records, Aly Spaltro has remained focused on music that connects, empowers and builds community. She built her fanship the old-fashioned way, getting in front of audiences and projecting her poetic confessionals, silencing rowdy crowds with an a cappella opening song in the center of a dark stage. Spaltro was quick to develop a reputation as a breakout star in New England, and then expanded slowly outwards, moving to New York at twenty to continue work on the songs that would become Ripely Pine, now celebrating its 10th anniversary. Her voice has never wavered, has grown more honest and open with time, and anyone witnessing the long lines of fans seeking signatures after her performances can see how her work has impacted fans. Her live shows are revelations, a further deep dive into what makes her work such a mainstay.

HALEY HEYNDERICKX

It takes a mix of skill and luck to tend a garden well, but it’s impossible without a certain amount of kindness and care tended. While the cyclical nature of gardening seems inherent, in some ways, Haley Heynderickx is just beginning. Her debut album, named I Need to Start a Garden out of a search for calm through these waves of uncertainty and upheaval, is out now via Mama Bird Recording Co.

For the empathetic singer/songwriter, the reasons for seeking such acceptance and understanding stem from a life of paradoxes. Heynderickx grew up in a religious household in Oregon, closely identifying with her Filipino roots, but also straddling multiple cultural identities. Now residing in Portland, her faith is not overt, but her introspection and continued struggle for self-actualization are easily accessible and relatable.

Likewise, the tracks on I Need to Start a Garden reflect these seemingly disparate elements. Through soft acoustic guitar picking and deftly accented trombone sighs, Heynderickx’s music immediately recalls folk music of the ‘60s and ‘70s mixed with a love of jazz radio. But Heynderickx’s singing—her vocals that range from tender to operatic—belie a tenacity in her soul.

It’s a balance then, between exposing and protecting herself on I Need to Start a Garden. Heynderickx vacillates between powerlessness (opener “No Face”) and empowerment (lead single “Oom Sha La La”), but her generosity of spirit remains the constant throughout the whole album.

You can hear that exceptional care in “Jo,” as she whispers, “You tended your garden like heaven and hell / and you built the birds houses to see if it helped at all.” Aware of the birds, the garden, and anyone listening acutely, Heynderickx’s music serves as an invitation for all to join her. Because the beauty of a garden is that, while it’s often started for deeply personal reasons, its bounty is best consumed and shared with others.

Working outside the confines of the traditional music industry, Adam Ezra and his bandmates – Corinna Smith (fiddle), Alex Martin (drums), Poche Ponce (bass) – built a community of fans through sheer grit and determination, regularly performing hundreds of shows a year for the past two decades without any major label or mainstream radio support. Fusing folk intimacy and rock energy with soul power and pop charm, the band first emerged from Boston in the early 2000s and quickly garnered widespread acclaim for their bold, insightful songwriting and interactive, euphoric performances. From hole in the wall bars and house concerts to sold-out headline shows and dates with the likes of Little Big Town, The Wallflowers, Gavin DeGraw, Train, and The Wailers, Ezra and his bandmates treated every single gig like their last, attracting a die-hard following that believed not just in the music, but in their commitment to activism and social change, as well.

SOGGY PO' BOYS

Join us for food and drinks before the show in our outdoor garden starting at 6pm!

The Soggy Po Boys, native to New England, have quickly become an institution. They are spreading the good news of New Orleans music across the northeast and beyond, playing at concert halls and street corners; music festivals and burlesque festivals; bars and libraries; wherever the party requires. Part of the beauty of New Orleans music is that it’s celebrated and appreciated wherever it goes, from the street to the theater.

The Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz, the band includes traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean), as well as Meters funk, soul, and brass band / street beat music.

“...These guys have done their homework, worked it out on the bandstand and put in the hours in the studio. It all adds up to a party you can bring with you when you want to treat your friends to a real good time.” -Ben Schenck of New Orleans’ Panorama Jazz Band”.

There are a myriad of traditions that flow into New Orleans culture just as there are tributaries that feed the Mississippi, and the Po Boys are eager to explore what makes the music of New Orleans so damn special. You’ll hear the heavy influence of the New Orleans sound across the band and in the stories told by their original tunes. Despite the scope of its sound, the outfit is only seven people, and thrives on the interplay and group dynamics that bring this music to life.

JIM MESSINA

The night’s food truck is Wood Fired Maine – featuring signature pizzas like their Three Cheese (Martha Stewarts’s favorite!), Honey Pepperoni, and Chili Fig and Gorgonzola, all on a naturally-leavened crust!

An undisputed expert in the fine art of making hit music, Jim Messina’s legacy of musical genius spans five decades, three super groups, a vibrant solo career and scores of producing and engineering credits.

While acting as producer/audio engineer for Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Buffalo Springfield, Messina ultimately joined the band as its bass player. When “the Springfield” disbanded in 1968, Jim and fellow bandmate Richie Furay formed Poco. With Jim on lead guitar, Poco defined a new musical genre, Country Rock. After three successful albums, Jim was ready for a change and left to return to his passion for producing music. He signed as an independent producer with Columbia Records.

In November 1970, Columbia asked Jim to work with an unknown Kenny Loggins. While helping Kenny get ready for a record and touring, the two discovered that they worked well together and Jim agreed to sit in on Kenny’s first album. Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina Sittin’ In was released in November of 1971 and an accidental duo was formed.

Over the next seven years, Loggins & Messina released eight hit albums, had scores of hit songs and sold over 16 million albums. They had become one of rock’s most successful recording duos ever, but it was time for the duo to go their separate ways.

After a series of celebrated solo acoustic tours, Jim formed a band made of acclaimed musicians who have played with him at various points in his career. His latest release, In the Groove, includes selected hits from all three of Jim’s previous bands, as well as several of his solo works.

Touring the country and playing sold-out shows, Jim says that he’s enjoying discovering who he is, where he’s been and, most significantly, where he’s going.
