The Suitcase Junket:
Matt Lorenz, the creative force behind The Suitcase Junket, envisions a captivating blend of grandiosity and solitude. His one-man spectacle, characterized by grand imagery, sound, and staging, stands in stark contrast to the solitary ethos of thrift and self-reliance that defines his musical craft. Lorenz’s ability to construct instruments from scratch and perform the roles of an entire band underscores his brilliance and inventiveness. Amidst the spectacle, Lorenz remains deeply committed to his craft, residing in rural Western Massachusetts with rescue dogs and chickens, all while building a profound catalog that intricately weaves together characters, narratives, and diverse sounds. In his 2020 release, “The End is New,” produced by longtime collaborator Steve Berlin, Lorenz confronts the challenges facing the world, expressing his response through a unique blend of truth, myth, confessions, and stories.
The album, born from Lorenz’s desire to create a “doom-folk” record, took shape in the midst of the global pandemic, transforming the recording process into a bizarre yet fruitful bicoastal collaboration. Despite the challenges, Lorenz, Berlin, and their studio musicians navigated the uncertainty, crafting an album that reflects both hope and desperation. As Lorenz expands his artistic horizons, collaborating and delving into societal reflections, “The End is New” emerges as a testament to his lyrical prowess, matched by epic sounds and narratives across eleven tracks. From the numbing effect of the news cycle in “Black Holes and Overdoses” to the protest against planetary overuse in “Can’t Look Away,” Lorenz’s sixth album showcases his evolution as an artist, blending refined sound with profound storytelling. With extensive touring plans in 2021 and an array of artistic endeavors, including visual art and video production, Lorenz continues to captivate audiences with his multifaceted creativity and unwavering commitment to his craft.
Sarah Cox:
Cape Porpoise, Maine-based singer-songwriter Sara Cox spent her childhood in Nashville, TN. She wrote her first song on ukulele at age 9 and the lyrics and songs on her albums reflect her southern roots and the hours spent listening to records on repeat, singing harmonies in headphones. Cox’s parents are musicians, and she grew up in a household where three-part harmony was a part of the usual after-dinner entertainment. She began singing and songwriting professionally in her early 20s and launched her solo career in 2000 with her first release, an EP called Firewater. Her debut full length solo album Arrive drew attention that led to her being named “One to Watch” by the syndicated public radio show Acoustic Cafe in association with the USA Songwriting Competition, as well as a stellar review by the folk/altcountry bible No Depression Magazine. Her 2008 album Crowded is the New Lonely was released to wide acclaim and charted on national Americana radio stations. Cox has shared the stage with Ray LaMontagne, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, John Hiatt, Suzanne Vega, Stacey Earle, Joe Ely, Richard Buckner and Lori McKenna.
